Green Spaces & Biodiversity

For more information about the many wonderful initiatives here at UWCSEA that are literally trying to green the campus read the information below and follow the links.

Rainforest Restoration Project

Rainforest Restoration Project operates on both campuses. It raises native and naturalised trees from seed in its own nurseries. The Nursery was established in 2006 and  funded with kind donations from the College Governors, parents, pupils, teachers and friends of UWCSEA. 2011 saw the first plantings of trees raised in the nursery on both UWCSEA campuses. 6 trees were taken to East in advance of the opening ceremony and over 25 trees were planted in December at Dover for UWC Day. The group also works with the Singapore National Parks helping to raise rainforest seedlings that we hope will be planted out in one of Singapore's Nature

Reserves as part of NParks' reforestation programme. Since 2012 we have been sponsored by the hugely generous Kirtida and Bharat Mekani who have enabled us to expand our operations as outlined in some of the articles below:

40 Trees Group

In August 2011 UWCSEA turned 40 years old. 40 Trees for 40 Years is a Middle School service group that continues to celebrate that anniversary by learning about and recording our oldest, largest, rarest, most remembered and most significantly located trees. The group has also collected tree-related stories and impressions from alumni, current students and staff. The results of all this research are shared with the wider community by means of a 40 Trees for 40 Years website.

Members of the 40 Trees group have grown in their knowledge and appreciation of our tree heritage. We hope that you, too, will try to learn more about the trees of the Dover Road campus by exploring our site and that you will then contribute both to their conservation and to the planting of new trees.

Gardening

Head Gardener Andy Tan
works with many groups sharing his great experience and love of plants. He runs the main plant nursery currently on the old Astro pitch. Andy's a man who knows a lot more about plants than he humbly admits to, so do see him for advice...but bear in mind with all the work he does maintain the greenery on campus, he's a very busy guy!

The Campus Gardening group helps create more green spaces around the College.

You can see examples of their work at the end of the Primary School block, in the “enchanted forest” along the edge of the main playground and in the garden outside the Junior School office. Recently another herb and vegetable garden has been added to the Canteen. The members, who range from Grade 2 to Grade 8 get their hands dirty and work hard alongside Andy, the College's Head Gardener, every Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Getting hungry? Note this message from the Campus Gardeners.

The Herb Gardens have an abundance of herbs for use. Please feel free to take home some herbs for your evening meal and your salads:

Coriander, sage, oregano, mint, rosemary, Italian basil, Thai basil, laksa leaves, chillies, small capsicums, lemongrass, pandanus, curry leave, parsley, thyme..

The Edible Schoolyard
group was set up in 2015 and focuses on growing herbs and vegetables for the community. They have a new dedicated site on the rooftop between the High school and Maths blocks. Their blog is here.
the gardening group is now known as Incredible Edibles
