Environmental Groups at Dover

The following groups operate at Dover Campus -please contact them if you want to be involved.

LEAF GC

LEAF GC aims to promote sustainable practices and advocate environmental awareness on campus.
Some of our primary initiatives are No Drive Day, in which taking environmentally methods of transportation to school is encouraged, Vegetarian Wednesday, a meatless day which occurs once every two weeks, and a deposit system for reusables at major community events such as UN Night. We have worked closely with Sodexo and the operations department to promote "zero waste" on campus, gradually replacing cutlery and crockery with re-usable options. leaf@gapps.uwcsea.edu.sg

Rainforest Restoration Project

The UWCSEA Rainforest Restoration project looks to increase the biodiversity of trees on both campuses and around Singapore. Secondly, to use nurseries to educate students about tree-related knowledge and practical skills. As well as this, we also aim to form strong collaborations with other environmental groups in Singapore.

Our group has been responsible for a large proportion of the trees planted around the campuses, the majority of them being native to Southeast Asia. We have partnered with the UWC foundation in a program where parents are able to Adopt-A-Tree on campus. This has seen increasing success in recent years.

Outside of the campuses, we annually attend environmental events such as Earthfest and work closely with Yale-NUS, NParks, and as of last year, the Singapore Scouts Association. These collaborations have yielded positive results, including a research collaboration with Yale-NUS.

Incredible Edibles

Here's a chance to grow food in our kitchen garden, with opportunities to develop a great range of skills: develop green fingers, plan the space for optimum production, promote 'eat local, eat fresh.

We are located on the rooftop garden next to the 2nd floor of the Heritage Cafe. In the gardens, we grow Lettuce, Tomatoes, Dill, Turmeric, Black Beans and even Cucamelons!

Most weeks, we weed most of the beds (big pots) and fill any beds which need to be filled with dirt and/or compost. In addition, occasionally we need to put new seeds in because we have new beds, the previous seeds don’t grow or we just have space!       Blog Link

Campus Gardening

Your team will propagate plants in the nursery, sowing seeds and planting cuttings that will later become the flowers and shrubs we need to beautify our garden spaces. We now incorporate many different groups all working hard to support our amazing landscapes team lead by the legend that is Andy Tan. With attacks by squirrels, snails and aphids, this group are sure developing some resilience and learning a lot too. They have had great successes along with the struggles through and customers at the Holiday Fair were delighted to buy delicious turmeric and herbs freshly harvested from our Dover gardens.

Tioman Turtles GC

The aim of the Juara Turtle Project is to help rejuvenate the habitat and protect the two remaining species of sea turtles that nest on Tioman Island.

Protecting Animal Welfare - ACRES

'ACRES is an animal protection organisation, driven by our concern for animals. We adopt research projects on the use of animals in various fields. Research findings are then used to educate the public to promote active community involvement in the animal protection movement, as well as strive towards synergistic partnerships with authorities and related parties.'

Magic Mulch

Mulching the trees planted around campus to improve the health of them, providing nutrients and fertilizer to ensure healthy growth.

Boomerang Bags

Concerned by the unnecessary number of plastic bags given out at stores in Singapore, we researched different ways to combat this problem. We realised that our school is a large contributor to the problem and searched for ways to change the culture of consumption in our school. We came across a Boomerang Bags Facebook ad and were immediately intrigued by it. After further research, we knew that the Boomerang Bags model was perfectly suited to be implemented in school. It appealed to us because it is primarily a grassroots, community-focused initiative that can foster a community of passionate like-minded people. We were also excited by the prospect of reusing fabric and reducing potential landfill waste.

Sustainability Projects and Committee

This lunchtime activity will work on taking action for sustainability as change-makers in the Middle School. The students will work on projects including recycling, food waste, and composting. This is a student leadership group, focused on our sustainability work at UWCSEA Dover. Students in this group are advocates for our sustainability initiatives. They communicate, educate, present and share their learning. They also campaign for action towards a more sustainable world, within the College and beyond.

Tiger Watch GC

Tiger Watch Ranthambore is a non-governmental organization registered in Mumbai under the Bombay Public Trusts Act. The organization’s primary objective is the conservation and protection of wildlife, at Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan. In addition, they have various initiatives such as the  Village Wildlife Volunteer Program, Dhonk Crafts and Mogya Children’s Foundation. Tiger Watch as an NGO has been able to increase the tiger population in Ranthambore by 60%, a tremendous accomplishment especially after the tigers were critically endangered. As a GC, we support them by raising funds and establishing a connection with members from the organization.

Grade 5 Composting Group

Thanks so much for providing this commitment to Environmental Stewardship on Campus.

This compost is used on our gardens to grow more fruit and vegetables...you’re helping complete Nature’s circle!

Boarding Environment Council
BEC Logo.pngBEC wishes to, first of all, educate and inspire the members of the Boarding Community to think and act sustainably and to be conscious of their effect on the environment around them through the careful manipulation of media and Boarding regulations. We want to transform the Boarding House into a habitat which embodies sustainability as much as possible by leading several transformative projects in the House, once an issue has been detected and carefully assessed.  Some initiatives we work towards is paper collection, effective laundry procedures, carbon off-setting, raising awareness, reducing waste and reducing energy usage.
